At a corner in the basement of City Square Mall, the bright lights and yellow signboard instantly caught my attention. Upon entering the shop, I was greeted by the cheery smiles of the shop assistants.
I had never seen so many pretty things in one shop in all my years of shopping! It has everything that you can think of, from scrapbooks, bags, to precious-looking ornaments, there is even a fashion stage at the back of the shop.
Founded just last year, Sunflower has already been featured on publications like Chic Magazine to TODAY newspaper. It was also featured as part of a Channel News Asia’s documentary titled “A Green Mark Singapore”.
It must be the shop’s one-of-a-kind concept of H.U.E.S that makes them stand out from the pack. H.U.E.S represents their commitment towards Handmade, Unique, Eco-friendly and Socially-conscious merchandise.
Sunflower was set up by brothers, Fhank Poh and Poh Boon Cheong in 2009. The main driving force for the business was based on optimism, creativity and entrepreneurship. “We wanted to put happy art in the shop”, says Boon Cheong, as he took me on a tour around his store, eagerly introducing me to the products.
Although it has only been around for a year, they have already gathered a loyal following of customers, most of them women in their mid-twenties and thirties. The founders have often been told that they have very nice products, which make great ideas for gifts.
The plethora of colours and the bright lights surrounding me was dazzling. Walking around the store, I found myself checking out most of the items, eager to spot something that would surprise me.
Beer Bottle Clocks
One of the first pieces that gave me a pleasant surprise. These Beer Bottle Clocks were made by a local tenant. Making these clocks is no easy feat! First the beer bottle, still intact is put into a Kiln (oven used for melting materials) and it goes through about 5 days of continuous melting and cooling, so that it would achieve the desired shape.
Who knew you could derive such a pretty craft piece from collecting and recycling beer bottles! This is one of the many environmentally friendly items in shop.
Jun’s Handmade Books
This is another environmentally friendly item that caught my eye. These notebooks are made from recycled paper and no two of them will look the same because each one is especially handmade. You also notice the amount of attention paid to the design when you take a close look.
Fashion Stage
At the back of the store is a clothes and accessories corner named the “Fashion Stage”. Some of them are clothing designed by budding local designers while others are manufactured and sourced from countries like Thailand. BlogShop owners also make up some of the tenants in the Fashion Stage.
Gift and Take (GAT)
Making it a point to be socially conscious, Sunflower partners up with social enterprises such as the Make-a-Wish Foundation and Gift and Take (GAT). GAT is a non-profit social enterprise that markets handcrafted products made by various marginalised groups in Singapore, Cambodia, Vietnam and Thailand.
Donate-a-Bag Drive
The Donate-a-Bag drive is an eco-friendly initiative in which customers can either donate or pick up a paper bag to reuse. Sunflower sometimes re-uses some of the paper bags that are left by donators, doing their part for Mother Earth.
If you are one who is constantly in the search for something one-of-a-kind, out-of-the-ordinary, out-of-the-blue, but still keeps its quality, Sunflower is the perfect destination for you.
In here, you will experience the creativity and charming designs of over 80 hand crafters and designers; mostly homemakers, retirees, expatriates and young BlogShop owners. Creative juices spawning from tenants coming from all walks of life, there’s definitely something here that you will like!
We recommend you to visit the shop regardless of whether you end up buying anything or not, because you’re sure to leave with a big smile on your face! And yes, Singapore sure has its own talents!
